Statement of Support for an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice
At its July 2023 School Board the University of Adelaide’s School of Humanities committed its support to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament and the larger aspirations of the Uluru Statement from the Heart.
We acknowledge that there are differing opinions on the Voice. We also acknowledge that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experience inequality of life expectancy, health, income, education and employment. The Voice will give Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people an opportunity to make representations to government that will help improve policies to close this gap.
The referendum requires every Australian voter to make a conscious decision about the Voice. It necessitates that everyone with the power to effect change is as informed as possible about what the Voice will and will not do. We already know that the Voice has greater than 80% grassroots First Nations support. It will not have the power to veto Parliament. It will not change the rights of non-Indigenous people. The referendum will endorse the principle of the Voice, and it will then be the Parliament’s role to determine legislative details based on democratic consultation.
The Uluru Statement from the Heart invites everyone to walk together in a movement of the Australian people for a better future. The School believes that the referendum offers a once in a generation opportunity for us to come together in honouring that invitation.
